The return of the legendary sports car…The third generation
The countdown for the Scirocco of the modern times has started. The third generation of the sports car arrives to the Portuguese market in September. With the launching of the two doors sports car, Volkswagen prepares the return of a legend. The first two generations of Scirocco made it’s way into the history of the brand as the most successful coupé of all times, with approximately 800.000 units sold.

The original Scirocco, presented in 1974, won a cult status. Scirocco, which was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, was an affordable sports car, practical to use on a daily base and also safe thanks to the rear traction.

The new Scirocco arrives to follow this tradition. Offers pure driving pleasure, new design, and high class technology, like the adaptive chassis control system and 7-speed DSG. It also has fuel efficient engines until 147kW/200HP, space for four adults, despite its sporty lines and the high level of everyday utility that characterises the Volkswagen vehicles. This combination of passion and logic costs much less than the general data of the vehicle seems to reveal.

The third Scirocco is the first Volkswagen to show the front section of a new age, capable of captivating an enlarged audience. Unique characteristics are the chromed illumination elements and dark gloss background of the headlights, connected by the radiator grill in the shape of a horizontal bar, also in a dark gloss colour. Beyond that, it offers space for versatility and cargo volume until 755 litres, thanks to the pulled back roof and the almost vertical rear eye-window.

With short overhangs, Scirocco takes maximum advantage of its wheelbase of 2578mm for maximum space. This Volkswagen is 1404mm tall, 4256mm long and 1810mm wide.

Initially Volkswagen will be offering two engines TSI (118kW/160HP and 147kW/200HP). Afterwards, it will arrive a TDI (turbo diesel common-rail, 103kW/140HP) and another TSI (90kW/122HP). A decisive aspect is that already with this entry-level engine of 122HP will be available a unit that supplies to the rear axle a maximum torque of 200Nm right from 1500rpm. However the average consumption of 6,1 litres per 100 kilometres is moderated.

The combination of a maximum torque with a low consumption is common to all the motorizations range. The new TSI with 160HP, contrasts with 240Nm at an average fuel consumption of 6,5l/100km.
Even in the TSI with 200HP (280Nm) the consumption is only 7,7 litres. As expected, also the TDI is in excellent shape: the 320Nm torque only needs 5,4 litres. Besides that, all engines until 160HP fulfill the future Euro 5 norm.

All Scirocco are equipped with a precise and smooth 6-speed gearbox. Optionally, is available a DSG dual clutch gearbox for the three engines from 140HP. In the TDI and TSI with 200HP will be used a 6-speed DSG gearbox.
The TSI with 160HP may be paired with the first 7-speed dual clutch transmission in the world that is transverse mounted.

The new adaptive chassis control DCC regulates the car suspension but also the electro-mechanical power steering, offering three programs: “Normal”, “Sport” and “Comfort”. The suspension is continuously being adapted to the roadway and driving situation. The system also reacts to acceleration, braking and steering inputs. Scirocco is a comfortable sports car.

Although the new Scirocco is included in the group of the more affordable sports cars, it has available a standard equipment at the level of the most expensive coupés. In the standard equipment is already included 17 inch alloy wheels; height adjustable driver and front passenger seats and steering wheel, leather parking brake grip, sport seats, split folding rear seats, electric windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, speed-dependent power steering and, of course, a sport chassis. In the model with 200HP, the equipment also includes a chromed exhaust tailpipe, the “black titanium” roof ceiling and sound generator. Optionally it is also available a panoramic open roof.
